  • Size (typically 608 bearings) Most scooters use an 8 mm axle and standard 608 bearings, so make sure the bearings fit both your wheels and your fork.
  • ABEC / precision rating A higher number may indicate finer tolerances and lower friction, but the quality of the materials and construction is at least as important.
  • Open vs. sealed bearings Sealed bearings (with shields or seals) offer better protection against dust and water, while more open bearings may roll a little more freely but require more maintenance.
  • Material and construction Steel bearings are standard; reinforced models with higher-quality steel and lubrication often provide both smoother rolling and a longer lifespan.
  • Riding style and level For hard landings and street or park use, robust bearings are more important than maximum top speed.

Compatibility, Installation and Safety

Compatibility mainly depends on the axle diameter and wheel hub. Most trick scooters use an 8 mm axle and 24 mm wide wheels that fit standard 608 bearings. If you use special wheels — for example, wider or uniquely designed ones — make sure to double-check the manufacturer’s specifications.

Installing bearings doesn’t require advanced tools, but it does require care. Press the bearings straight into the wheel, ideally applying even pressure around the outer ring to avoid damaging the bearing. You can use a bearing press or the axle of your fork with a nut to gently pull the bearing into place.

A correctly installed bearing should sit firmly without play, but the wheel must still spin freely and quietly. Always tighten the axle bolts to remove any looseness, but avoid over-tightening, which can cause stiffness in the bearings. Loose or damaged bearings can seize up or block the wheel, so regularly check for grinding noises, play, or sudden resistance — it’s a matter of both performance and safety.

Maintenance and Durability

The durability of bearings depends on how much and how you ride, and how well you maintain them. Sealed bearings usually require less maintenance, while open bearings benefit from being cleaned and lubricated at regular intervals.

Avoid riding in heavy rain, sand or mud whenever possible, as this will significantly shorten their lifespan. If the bearings get wet, remove the wheels, gently dry them and let them air dry to reduce the risk of rust. With frequent use in ramps and street environments, it’s normal to replace bearings periodically when you notice they roll less smoothly or start to make noise.
